    Morris County Nursing Home Abuse Attorney

    Nursing home abuse can be devastating to elderly residents and their families. When you place a loved one in a nursing home, the facility promises to provide the highest quality care. Unfortunately, many nursing homes don’t live up to this promise. Learning that a loved one has been mistreated by their caregiver is alarming. When the mistreatment results in a serious injury or the death of a loved one, it can be downright heartwrenching.

    What are Common Signs of Nursing Home Neglect?

    Elderly nursing home residents are sometimes neglected and abused by the facilities responsible for their care. Whether the senior lives at an assisted living facility or nursing home, you may save your loved one from pain and suffering by being vigilant for signs of elder abuse. If you suspect that a loved one is at risk due to an understaffed nursing home, improper care or is being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up. Below are some common signs of nursing home neglect and abuse.

    • Falls – Elderly nursing home residents should be evaluated for their risk for falling. Falls can happen when walking, sitting in a chair or even from a bed. Sometimes falls are unavoidable. In other cases, residents fall because caretakers fail take proper precautions. If your loved one suffers a fall related injury you should call an experienced nursing home injury lawyer to discuss their legal rights.
    • Bedsores and pressure ulcers are common, telltale signs of nursing home neglect. Bedsores are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure on the skin. A nursing home must take proper precautions to prevent bedsores.  This includes, among other things, making sure residents change positions periodically.
    • Fractures, broken bones, lacerations, cuts and bruises may indicate abuse at the home. If you suspect that an elderly resident is being abused don’t let them suffer alone. Ask questions. If caretakers cannot provide the answers you need, speak up and file a complaint.
    • Malnourishment and dehydration may be indicative of improper diet or supervision by nursing staff during meal time.
    • Improper wound care – Failure to properly treat a wound can result in infection and possibly lead to amputation of a limb or appendage;
    • Infections – Many infections are preventable. For example, the risk of UTIs can be reduced by limiting the use of catheters and more frequent diaper changes. In addition, proper hand hygiene by staff and residents can minimize transmission of infections like pneumonia or other conditions that are spread through the air or commonly touched surfaces. Nursing homes should take precautions, such as routine screening of residents for bacterial infections and isolating the sickest residents to control the spread of infection.
