In a major win for Pennsylvania motorists, Senate Bill 928 passed the PA Senate today. This bill would increase the minimum auto insurance limits required in Pennsylvania to $25,000/$50,000/$15,000 from $15,000/$30,000/$5,000.
As discussed in a prior blog (PA House Bill Would Raise Minimum Auto Insurance Limits) Pennsylvania’s minimum auto insurance limits have not been increased in over 4o years and are currently the lowest in the nation. Unfortunately, this often means that people who were seriously injury in Pennsyvlania auto accidents, and family members of those involved in fatal car accidents, cannot make a full recovery because the negligent driver was under-insured.
However, this is only the first step in passing the bill. Next, it will be sent to the Republican controlled PA House of Representatives for a vote. It is expected that this bill will meet strong opposition from the auto insurance industry and insurance lobbyists who prefer writing smaller policies so to decrease their own risk of exposure for damages caused in serious motor vehicle accidents.
I encourage you to contact your PA House Representative and let him/her know how important it is to you that drivers in Pennsylvania be required to carry minimum auto insurance limits that are sufficient to protect others using the roadway.
