Theres no question that Lyft and Uber have become part of our every day lives. Rideshare companies have revolutionized the way we travel and have become a modern convenience that few of us would ever want to live without. However, these rideshare companies have recently put drivers and passengers at risk by cutting insurance which is intended to protect Pennsylvania residents.
By way of history, in 2016, Governor Tom Wolf signed a bill that permitted ride-share companies to operate legally in Pennsylvania. When this bill was enacted, it required rideshare companies to provide enhanced levels of insurance. The intent was to ensure that drivers would be kept “safe and secure”.
Lyft and Uber each initially provided drivers with $1,000,000 of liability and Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) protection while they were logged in and transporting passengers. However, Lyft and Uber have recently dropped uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance that is intended to protect drivers and passengers alike.
First, in March 2020, a representative a Lyft, without prior warning, waived uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on behalf of its drivers. Following suit, in 2022 Uber has also waived Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) protections.
As a result, rideshare drivers and passengers, who have been seriously injured in an accident through no fault of their own, have been left empty handed or unable to receive full compensation for their injuries.
